The year is 1820, the month, October. What better time than that of the blood moon for dark mischief?
The Harbinger’s Head is a fantasy/horror interactive fiction novel set in a myth-infested 19th century Ireland. Your story begins where others end—in the woods, in the dark, standing before a headless harbinger of death.
He seeks vengeance, and a thief upon whom to wreak it. In order to prove your innocence and preserve your life, it’s up to you to help him find his missing head and the culprit who stole it. Otherwise, it’ll be your head on the chopping block next.
Written in ChoiceScript, The Harbinger’s Head is a text-based game of chance and choice in which every decision could have dire consequences.
- Name your character, select your gender and profession, and prepare to navigate a world steeped in old magic and fresh blood.
- Develop your personality and hone your skills as you will—or trust your luck and hope that fate smiles upon you.
- Beware the Fae creatures whose paths you cross. Befriend or betray them at your own peril.
- Death waits around every corner. Choose wisely, and you just might survive long enough to discover one of 8 “true” endings.
Praise for The Harbinger’s Head:
“What a fun read! Suspenseful and set in a rich world of Irish folklore, The Harbinger’s Head has a thrilling climax that doesn’t disappoint. Unlike the choose your own adventures of the 70s and 80s, the author does not punish you for taking risks. A great read for people who love Neil Gaiman and the world-building of his genre. The story world also reminds me a bit of Marion Zimmer Bradley’s . . . a fun adventure for fantasy lovers.”

“What a gem; I genuinely wish this story was just a little longer, couldn’t get enough.”

“It’s quite a lovely story, where your choices determine how your little adventure winds up in the end. Slightly short but a well balanced story with enough edge to play another round. Another route. :3”

“This is certainly going on my favorites list! It’s extremely well-written, the characters are all three-dimensional and I came to love all of them . . . I’ll be honest, I do not hope for much from stories with a shorter word-count (mostly because I’m almost always left wanting more) but this surpassed my expectations and was a very satisfying read.”

“I’ve been watching this ever since I accidentally stumbled on it on Dashingdon! I bought it as soon as I found out it came out. I enjoy it so much. Short and sweet with a nice atmosphere.”
