As of the day before yesterday, March 31, 2019, Odd Lazdo and I officially launched our first collaboration (and my first visual novel project) ever: The Dragon’s Last Flight. More specifically, we released the (free!) demo.
I’ve never used Ren’Py, or programmed with Python, before in my life. Happily, however, I found that Ren’Py really is pretty easy to learn (especially having previously learned a bit of coding when creating The Harbinger’s Head in ChoiceScript), and making visual novels is actually kind of… fun! (Who knew?! :P) I dropped drafting once we had more than enough for a short demo and dove headfirst into programming, while Odd Lazdo supplied me with all of the lovely art necessary to bring our narrative fully to life.
What we initially meant to be a one-off 30-day experiment in collaborative storytelling has morphed rather unexpectedly into something a bit… longer. Thus, instead of a full story, our NaNoRenO 2019 submission is but a small taste of the full narrative—a free demo showcasing just enough writing and art to (hopefully) whet one’s appetite. It begins with a dragonslayer and a dragon, and an unusual dilemma.
As for how it will end… stay tuned!
